It is with great joy and heartfelt gratitude, I invite you to join me in supporting the 2024 Boston Kidney Walk and to celebrate the monumental milestone in transplantation: the opening of the Massachusetts General Hospital's new Center for Clinical Transplant Tolerance. This remarkable event holds special significance for me, as it was there, at that very hospital, where my life took a transformative turn fifteen years ago.
During the challenging times of my diagnosis, dialysis , transplant and recovery my family was my unwavering pillar of support. Their presence by my side during those stressful times was a beacon of hope and strength, and I am forever grateful for their love and care.
However , it was my younger brother, Stephen, who truly stands as a hero in my life. Despite his own demanding career, a loving wife, a young child and another on the way , Stephen selflessly agreed to give me not only his kidney but also his bond marrow. He entered into a study filled uncertainties, offering me a chance at a healthier future. His sacrifice and unwavering love are the foundations of my continued health and well-being. Beyond my family, I am profoundly grateful to the incredible team at Massachusetts General Hospital. Among them, Kerry Cristalli, was more than just a coordinator; she was a genuine ally during the process, offering unwavering support that alleviated my fears and apprehensions. Her role in my life will away s be held dear.
The doctors at this esteemed institution inspired a confidence in me that solidified my decision to be part of the study, knowing that this was the path meant for me. Dr. Kawai's dedication to medicine and translation changes my life forever, and I recognize the privilege of having access to such exceptional expertise. Dr. Nina Rubin's confidence and passion filled me with hope, and the story of Dr. Consumi, the cowboy from Colorado, showcases the incredible dedication and calm demeanor that define the sprint of Massachusetts General Hospital. As we celebrate the opening of the Center for Clinical Transplant Tolerance, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Massachusetts General Hospital and the entire tolerance team.
