Why I Walk
I walk in honor of my beautiful Mom who courageously fought her stage 5 kidney failure. Her battle began before we knew what was going on. Once she decided to start dialysis, 4 times a week for 3 hours, Dad nicknamed her the Comeback Kid. Mom had a hard fight ahead of her and she never fought alone. She put in hard work and persevered through many obstacles. Even with how hard it was for her, she always put others needs first. Heart breakingly, she lost her fight with kidney failure on September 12, 2023.I walk not only to honor her battle with kidney failure but the amazing life and legacy she left behind. She was caring, hard working, loving, one of a kind, selfless, a wonderful cook, and a million other things. Myself, my family, and many others that knew her miss her beyond words. I also walk for all the people fighting their kidney disease battles and their families that support them and all those who will face this fight.
I walk because too many families (like mine did) are coping with this devastating chronic illness, and thousands more will face an unexpected kidney disease diagnosis in the year to come.
I walk to support the lifechanging work of the National Kidney Foundation:
- To ensure that families will have a place to turn when they need answers.
- To keep up the fight for policy changes to protect kidney patients and living donors.
- To drive innovation in transplantation and get more loved ones off the kidney transplant waitlist.
