Why I Walk

I walk to share my story about becoming a living kidney donor.  It's been quite a journey that started with a local family sharing their story.  Back in 2012, I joined a bone marrow registry to help a family find a match for their children battling a rare form of blood cancer – and almost 10 years later, I was a match for someone on the registry and donated stem cells.  That experience really opened my eyes to the incredible impact of what the body can do for others.  Following this, I broadened my involvement to include regular blood and platelet donations through the Red Cross, and subsequently, researched and pursued living kidney donation.
 
Approaching my two-year anniversary as a living kidney donor, I am pleased to report a full and healthy recovery. My experience has reinforced the profound impact living donation can have on recipients and their families.
 
I'm walking to support the National Kidney Foundation because they do such vital work. They're there for families facing tough decisions, fighting for better laws to protect kidney patients and donors, and pushing for amazing breakthroughs in transplantation.
