Why I Walk

Over 20 years ago, my brother shared troubling news—he was experiencing severe fatigue. Medical tests revealed a leaking heart valve and dangerously low kidney function due to IgA nephropathy, requiring a kidney transplant before addressing his heart problem. Our family underwent testing, and I was found to be the best match. Though nervous, I volunteered to donate my kidney, knowing my brother would do the same for me.
 

My brother postponed the operation for six years through diet and exercise. When his kidney function dropped dangerously low, my testing began. The preparation included more blood tests, a colonoscopy due to my age, and meetings with a doctor advocate. I was reassured I could stop the process anytime without question.
 

We arrived at the hospital two days before the surgery. The day of the operation was filled with worry and hope. The surgery was successful, and both my brother and I emerged with renewed strength. His heart valve was replaced shortly thereafter, and he regained his vitality.
 

Reflecting on this experience, I realize that the bond of family can drive us to make extraordinary sacrifices. The journey we endured together strengthened our connection and reminded us of the resilience and love that underpin our lives.
 

I walk because too many families are coping with this devastating chronic illness, and thousands more will face an unexpected kidney disease diagnosis in the year to come.
