Why We Walk
We lost our husband/father/grandfather 10 years ago to kidney failure, so we walk in his memory. The month before his death, Mike and Mary Ann celebrated their 44th anniversary. Three weeks later, he was installed as District Governor for Rotary District 6080. He seemed to be doing well on dialysis and was looking forward to the future. He cherished his two granddaughters--Brooklyn, who was 4 at the time, and Lillian, who was 17 months old--and they adored him. His daughter, Kelly, says he was her best friend. A decade later, we still grieve for him, but we honor his memory by walking.
We walk to support the efforts of the National Kidney Foundation in hopes that the work that they do can provide assistance and support to all affected by kidney disease and we walk for Mike, whose life was cut short by kidney failure.
We walk because too many families are coping with this devastating chronic illness, and thousands more will face an unexpected kidney disease diagnosis in the year to come.
We walk to support the life-changing work of the National Kidney Foundation:
- To ensure that families will have a place to turn when they need answers.
- To keep up the fight for policy changes to protect kidney patients and living donors.
- To drive innovation in transplantation and get more loved ones off the kidney transplant waitlist.
