Why I Walk
October is the anniversary of my Kidney diagnosis. In 2017 my world crashed down with a kidney diagnosis, renal failure. For years I was in chronic pain and no one could figure out what was going on until the culprit revealed itself October 7, 2017. A cyst had grown to the size of a small basketball, killing off my right kidney, my left kidney fighting hard to function for me. Once my right kidney was removed, my left kidney began functioning better but the damage was done. I now have chronic kidney disease and have to watch my diet to try to preserve this kidney the best I can. It is a constant STRUGGLE. My birthdays and other occasions, I try to find causes to celebrate my renal journey. This October has a fabulous walk right at the anniversary …
I walk because too many families (like mine) are coping with this devastating chronic illness, and thousands more will face an unexpected kidney disease diagnosis in the year to come.
I walk to support the lifechanging work of the National Kidney Foundation:
- To ensure that families will have a place to turn when they need answers.
- To keep up the fight for policy changes to protect kidney patients and living donors.
- To drive innovation in transplantation and get more loved ones off the kidney transplant waitlist.
