This year I will be celebrating 2 years since my full radical nephrectomy, and a new chapter in joining the NKF Planning Committee.
On January 30th 2023 a renal angiomyolipoma tumor (AML), measuring 167mm covering my right kidney hemorrhaged causing massive internal bleeding. I had emergency surgery to place 17 coil clamps on the artery, and required 7 blood transfusions in order to stabilize my body. This was just Phase 1.
The amount of blood that flowed into me at initial hemorrhage caused fear for additional surgeries, so we had to wait and watch- one to make sure the clamps held and two what to do with the tumor.
Phase 2- The decision was made to perform a full radical nephrectomy, removing the tumor and my right kidney.
On May 24th the surgery happened early in the morning and with my mom and brother with me until I went under, and by late afternoon I was awake (with drugs:), and even with a 10inch scar down my belly and acute pain- I felt relief and a weight removed.
The healing process on the body is one thing, I dare say trivial to the mental and emotional healing. The complete change of one's life up to this point and the move forward plan.
I'm now excited to be part of a focus to give back in honor of my doctors and nurses who saved my life and family and friends who cared for me thru this journey! Today I am strong and healthy and having new adventures :)
