Dear Friend,

When it first became clear that people could survive kidney disease, the National Kidney Foundation was formed to save lives...but for too many, kidney disease remained a killer. Today, the voices of millions are heard as government, healthcare providers and patients join together to advance knowledge, improve access to care, and  to change the nature of prevention and treatment….and while millions live better with kidney disease, over half a million waste away on dialysis, and dozens die everyday, waiting for a transplant.

Family, friends,  superior medical care, the help of NKF, and a living donor through Renewal have enabled me to be among the survivors, to live to enjoy my family and friends, to dance at Mara and Matt’s wedding, to publish in medical journals, to advocate to Congress, and to impact positively upon research, policy and people.  Renewal, has grown into a national group, and I work with NKF, the American Association of Kidney Patients, and others from Cambridge to West Texas, Iowa, Albany to Washington... across the internet and across the globe, to create a new and better future. Rapidly, we move forward, but too many who I have known have suffered and perished, and I must speak for them.

A key ingredient my being here today has been the kindness and support shown by you toward our family throughout this ordeal, with many of you joining Team Friedman in the New York Kidney Walk.

The National Kidney Foundation, in building awareness, providing programs for patients and families, fostering legislation and policies, and supporting innovation, quality of care and health equity, makes it possible for so many to find a pathway to survival and wellbeing. They are efficient, effective, caring and forward-looking, and truly worthy of your support.

This year, on Sunday, November 13th at 9:30 am, we invite you to join us at the uptown corner of Duane and Lafayette Streets in Lower Manhattan at 9:30am, across from Foley Square, along with tens of thousands of others, to support this terrific organization and to walk with us across the Brooklyn Bridge.

When my doctor spoke those dreaded words, “End Stage Renal Disease,” his answer to my many questions was “we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.” Thanks to all those who’ve have helped me along my journey, we have crossed many bridges together, and the National Kidney Foundation has been there, all along the way.

Thank you for your support and participation, and we wish you a New Year of health, peace, justice and happiness.

Fondly,
Team Friedman: Bob, Janet, Aaron, Isaac, Mara and Matt
